Workout - Koh Chang

If you are a fitness addict or if you just want to exercise, don't worry, there are gyms and fitness centres on Koh Chang.

More and more hotels and resorts have their own Fitness Center available for their guests. They are more or less all offering the same type of equipment, treadmill, bicycle, cross-trainer, a bench, and a set of dumbbells. Some are a bit bigger with multi-exercises machines. Most of them have a/c but personally, I prefer without.
When you will train, fan or a/c, you sweat. In a gym with a/c, when you will leave it and go outside, because of the heat and humidity it will be like moving from a fridge to a sauna. You will sweat twice more. Without a/c you will sweat more during your exercises but at least it's the same temperature as outside. It's just a question of taste.

If your hotel or resort doesn't have a Fitness Center or if what they have is too small for you, there are several good gyms on the island and on the west coast. They also sell nutrition complements like proteins and protein shakes, pre-workout, amino acids, recovery,...
My favourite protein drink is a Chocolate Soy Milk carton. It's about 20 baht and you can find it in any supermarket. Cold, it feels very good.

Cycling on Koh Chang

There are different ways to discover the island and one of my favourites is to do it by bicycle.

You can rent a bike and go by yourself or book a bicycle tour with a guide. There are lots of places where you can rent bicycles, even some resorts have bicycles for their guests. Personally, I prefer Koh Chang Holiday in Chai Chet, the mountain bikes Boong is renting are in very good shape compared to other places. Prices start from 150 baht per day but for a longer period, you will get a better deal. And it includes a helmet, front and taillights, and a lock.

You never know what can happen during your holidays, be sure you have travelling insurance which will cover all the costs in case of an accident.

The west coast is very busy, be extremely careful, cars, motorbikes, vans, trucks and even stray dogs won't care about you. Prefer to explore small roads where there is less traffic. From White Sand beach to Kai Bae it's pretty easy. But between Klong Son and White Sand Beach and between Kai Bae and Bang Bao there are steep hills. It's a good way to train but if you are not used to it, it will be very hard.
And if it's sunny or not, remember to take water with you, with the small wind or with the clouds you won't feel the heat but if you don't drink you will dehydrate fast. You can also get nasty sunburns on your neck, arms, and calves.

The east coast is much better, more relaxed. It's very quiet, much less traffic than on the west side and the hills are very gentle. And the best part, most of the roads are in the shadow which is very pleasant during the high season.

If you are not confident to explore the island by yourself, then why not book a bicycle tour with an experienced guide?
Chat from Slow Life Cycling, who is also the owner of the excellent Pajamas Koh Chang Hostel, is arranging such tours. It starts in Klong Son, taking a small road and discovering the local life. The tour costs about 1,000 baht per person and it includes the transfer from your resort or hotel, the bicycle, the helmet, water, lunch, snacks, and insurance.

Golf on Koh Chang

There are 2 places on Koh Chang where you can play golf, one golf course in Klong Son and one golf range in Klong Prao.

In Klong son, it’s a 9 holes pitch and putts, par 27 golf course and it’s is located at Siam Royal View, just a few hundred meters from the beach

Klong Son golf course

The holes which are named after the two nearby beaches are played over the same ground but in both directions, making it 18 holes, par 54 courses. The direction reverses daily at lunchtime.

Chang Noi nine, holes 1 to 9, par 27, 554 yards (507m - left picture) and Half Moon nine, holes 10 to 18, par 27, 571 yards (523m - right picture):

The golf course features raised greens, tee areas, and bunkers, surrounded by water and connected by wooden walkways.
The course was fully designed in compliance with the International Pitch & Putt Federation Regulations and tournament specifications.

Due to the relaxed beach environment, the holiday atmosphere and in line with other pitch and putt courses around the world, the dress code is less stringent than on a full-size golf course.
However, players must be dressed in at least a sleeved tee-shirt and shorts must be worn. Shoes are recommended.
Rules are the same as any other golf course and any disregard of the guidelines will exclude the player from the course.
